Just Released!!! May 2011 narratED Digital Storytelling Training Workshop Stories

Last Saturday, the May 2011 narratED Digital Storytelling Training Workshop concluded with the screening of fantastic digital stories.

The diversity of these stories will astound you. Lica Marhao, a Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) mathematics instructor, created a teaching story entitled “Pi: The Number That Fascinates Humanity.”

Cindy Burkhalter from Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas, created a lovely tribute to four generations of quilting women in her family. Also from Angelo State University, Lynette Crockett produced a moving story in honor of her beautiful, hard-working mother who raised six children alone after her husband’s death.

Two other participants from CVCC produced stories to promote their areas on campus. Career Counselor Teresa Ray produced a story entitled “Writing Your Story . . . Living Your Dream . . . .” Job Placement Representative Jean Lane created a story for her program called “Off to the Races.”

Developmental English instructor Krysten Buchanan produced a moving story about the women of her family entitled “Ladies of Grace.” Darlene Hudson, who works in the CVCC Basic Skills Program, created a digital story to honor her youngest son and to chronicle important family history. And, Jerry Sain, CVCC Writing Center Coordinator, secured permission from author Carol Edelstein to transform one of her pieces of flash fiction into a digital story. These are all top-notch stories!

Lica Marhao Proves the Complementary Nature of Mathematics and Digital Storytelling!

Lica Marhao, Catawba Valley Community College Mathematics Instructor, created a “first” for our school. She produced a digital story on mathematics, specifically the mysterious and infinite number pi. Lica has plans to build a series of these stories which are sure to engage her students. Lica is also the author of Number Lane Tales or Multiplication Facts Made Fun for Everyone.

Cindy Burkhalter Honors Family Tradition of Quilt Making

Cindy Burkhalter is the Director of the Writing Center and Lecturer in the Department of English at Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas. Cindy and her colleague Lynette Crockett attended the May 2011 narratED Digital Storytelling Training Workshop. A fourth-generation quilt maker, Cindy chronicles her family’s history written with colorful fragments of cloth, needle, and thread.

Lynette Crockett Produces Moving Tribute to Her Mother

I was delighted to have two faculty members from Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas, in attendance at the May 2011 narratED Digital Storytelling Workshop. Lynette Crockett wrote a beautiful script that captures the essence of her hard-working mother who raised six children alone after her husband’s death. Lynette achieved the “narrative spin” required of a strong digital story, and viewers enjoy the satisfaction of returning to an opening image that is similar but enriched with layers of meaning.

Jerry Sain Produces Digital Story Version of Flash Fiction Piece

Jerry Sain, Catawba Valley Community College Writing Center Coordinator, assisted several English students this spring who had been assigned to analyze Carol Edelstein’s flash fiction piece, “232-9979.” When Jerry decided to attend the narratED Digital Storytelling Workshop, he contacted Edelstein to see if she would grant him permission to transform her flash fiction piece into a digital story. Jerry’s work is an interesting departure from many of the personal, non-fiction digital stories that have been produced in the past.

Teresa Ray Highlights Career Center Services at Catawba Valley Community College

Teresa and her Career Center colleagues plan to produce a series of videos to help inform students of the many resources available.

Krysten Buchanan’s “Ladies of Grace” Salutes Family Solidarity

Krysten Buchanan, Developmental English Instructor at Catawba Valley Community College, shares an amazing family tradition dating back to her great-grandmother Grace. Once each month — grandmothers, mothers, aunts, nieces, daughters, granddaughters, great-granddaughters — all gather to renew family ties. Krysten plans to use digital storytelling in some of her Developmental English classes this coming fall term.
